Describing Musical Contour with Tonality, Voicing, and Dissonance Levels

چکیده
This project provides a quantitative way to describe the contours of musical pieces from the western classical music repertoire. These contours describe what happens in a piece of music over time according to some measurement: either a measurement of dissonance, spacing, or tonal strength. This project normalizes many of these individual contours and combines them to get an average contour over many pieces. By studying these aggregate contour, one can determine if a musical event or feature tends to occur more often at a specific point in a piece, for instance in the very middle. This project finds that there is some trend amongst levels of dissonance in the Bach Chorales, but it is inconclusive about trends in voice spacing and tonality.

Diatonic, Chromatic, Enharmonic; Consonance, Dissonance Historical and Cultural Space Meanings
In music there are several terms permanently used, whose meaning changed in time, depending on the historical moment or cultural space; among them, consonance and dissonance, diatonic, chromatic, and enharmonic. Tonality appeared during baroque era and was finalized by J.S. Bach. After that, it grew up in the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt – for about 150 years. At the end of ...
متن کاملContributions of pitch contour, tonality, rhythm, and meter to melodic similarity.
The identity of a melody resides in its sequence of pitches and durations, both of which exhibit surface details as well as structural properties. In this study, pitch contour (pattern of ups and downs) served as pitch surface information, and tonality (musical key) as pitch structure; in the temporal dimension, surface information was the ordinal duration ratios of adjacent notes (rhythm), and...
متن کاملInterplay between musical practices and tuning in the marimba de chonta music
In the Pacific Coast of Colombia there is a type of marimba called marimba de chonta, which provides the melodic and harmonic contour for traditional music with characteristic chants and dances. The tunings of this marimba are based on the voice of female singers and allows musical practices, as a transposition that preserves relative distances between bars. Here we show that traditional tuning...

This paper explores the concepts of metrical consonance and dissonance in a broad and yet articulate way. Krebs first gives a brief review of previously studies. He then extends the definition by Yeston to combine the concepts of levels of motion and musical meter to define metrical consonance and dissonance. Another modification of Yeston’s work is extending the applicable range of dissonance ...
متن کاملA Method for Computer characterization of "Gesture" in Musical Improvisation
In the design of interactive computer music systems and the composition of interactive computer music, the tracking and analysis of musical "gestures" — characteristic motions discerned within musical attributes — provides a promising challenge. There are in fact ways that one can clearly and empirically define and identify "gesture" in musical content, often with conceptual models and tools si...
